    There is a short guide with the most important churches and monasteries from all Romania. Before to built Activ Travel company, Valeriu Catargiu the manager and one of the best tour giude for outdoor travel, was specialized and worked about 4 years in restoring important art monuments in Romania, like: Snagov, Brancoveni, Stramba, Sain Mina from Craiova City, Frumoasa Churches from Iasi City, a great fresque inside Philharmonic orchestra Transylvania from Cluj-Napoca City and other less important churches from all Romania. MOLDAVIA AND BUKOVINA PROVINCES

1.Putna Monastery  - One of the greatest in Romania. A great history and culture start and continuous here. A strong monastic life and great traditions, represent an international spiritual place. Here is the grave of the most important ruler of Moldavia Province in the 15th century - Stefan cel Mare si Sfant (Stephan the Great ). 2. Sucevita Monastery - built between 1582 - 1584 by the brothers Gheorghe and Ieremia Movila. It is a fortified monastery, surrounded by a high wall with defense tower. 3. Moldovita Monastery - founded by Petru Rares in 1532, the valuable mural painting was made in 1537. It's the biggest church raised during the Moldavian style flourishing period. 4. Voronet Monastery - also named "Eastern Sixtine Chapel". It was founded in 1488 by the Moldavian ruler, Stephan the Great and it was built in the Moldavian style of that period. 5. Bogdana Monastery - Radauti town - the oldest church in Moldavia, founded by voivode Bogdan the Ist in 1365. Here are the tombs of the first rulers of Moldavia. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R1

6. Arbore Church - built in 1503 by the court noble Luca Arbore, who was buried here. The painting was made in 1541. It predominates the green with many shades. UNESCO patrimony. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R1.

9. Sfantul Ioan cel Nou Monastery from Suceava - is a religious complex located in the center of the city and raised in time. First Sf. Gheorghe Church was started in 1514 by Bogdan the IIIrd and finished by his son, Stefanita in 1522. Then other buildings, the bell tower and abbey were built between 1589 and 1896. UNESCO patrimony. 10. Mirauti Church from Suceava - builded between 1375 - 1391, it was the first headquarters of the Moldavian bishop. It was here that Stephan the Great was declared ruler over Moldavia after receiving the bishop blessing. The church was restored between 1898 - 1901.
11. Sfantul Dumitru Church from Suceava - was founded by prince Pertu Rares between 1534 and 1535. Alexandru Lapusneanu voivode built the three-floor bell tower, while the last floor was added in the 19th century. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in Route R5 ; Route R2 .
12. Hagigadar Monastery near Suceava - the most important Armenian church in Romania. It is also frequented by Romanian Christians. Was built in 1512 by Armenian community. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in Route R5.
13. Popauti Monastery from Botosani - it was built in 1496 by Stephan the Great , with valuable and original paintings. The monastery has solid walls and a watching tower, so its aspects is that of a fortress. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R1 ; Route R2 .
 
14. Uspenia Church from Botosani - it was built in 1552 by Lady Elena, the wife of the ruler Petru Rares and host valuable paintings, sculptures, old books. The national poet of Romania - Mihai Eminescu - was baptized here. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R1 ; Route R2.
15. Armenian Church from Botosani was built in 1350, when in town lived a large Armenian community. Is   the oldest Armenian church in Romania. Are necessaries a serious restoring. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in Route R2.
16. Saint Nicholas Ruling Church - Dorohoi Town - it was built by Stephan the Great in 1495, in Moldavian style, with rich decorations on the walls, including many elements of the Byzantine style.
17.Vorona Monastery - with an important cultural life, this monastic complex was built in 1600 in a beautiful hills area. Wood icons painting centre.
18. Cosula Monastery - it was built in 1535 by the ruler Petru Rares in the Moldavian medieval style. On both side of the church walls, wonderful paintings, from that period. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in Route R1

19. Probota Monastery - built in 1530 by Petru Rares, who was buried here, with his wife. It still preserves very beautiful original frescoes from 1532. UNESCO patrimony.

20. Slatina Monastery - founded by the voivode Alexandru Lapusneanu in 1561. Inside the church, rest in their graves the voivode and two of his daughters.
21. Rasca Monastery - built in 1542 by Petru Rares, here was an very important cultural center. Preserve beautiful mural paintings.
22. Trei Ierarhi Monastery - from Iasi City  - "one of the most interesting and peculiar religious buildings in Europe" as the French architect Lecomte de Nouy used to present it. Erected by ruler Vasile Lupu in 1637 - 1642, the church is characterized by the beauty and richness of its decorations. UNESCO patrimony. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R1 ; Route R2.
23. Golia Monastery from Iasi City - built between 1650 - 1660 by Vasile Lupu. The fronts is decorated in the Renaissance style what makes it unique in Moldavia. Inside has a valuable frescoes. 24 Metropolitan Cathedral - Iasi City - it's a monumental building founded between 1840 - 1880 in Baroque and Neo-Classical style, painted by N. Tattarascu. Is the biggest Orthodox Church in Romania. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R1 ; Route R2.
25. Cetatuia Monastery - Iasi City - built by ruler Gheorghe Duca (1669 - 1672), forms an original and interesting monastic complex. It was an important cultural center.
26. Dobrovat Monastery - built by Stephan the Great between 1503 - 1504. It was the first church  painted from the time of Petru Rares ruler. UNESCO patrimony
27. Sf. Gheorghe Church - Harlau (1492) - was build by Stephan the Great.

28. Neamt Monastery - one of the most valuable sites in Romania. The most important center of culture and art of medieval Moldavia. The church of the monastery is one of the most impressive constructions of Stephan the Great (1497). Here are the oldest library (more then 600 years) in the country and an interesting museum. 29. Secu Monastery - it was built by the chancellor Nestor Ureche, in the 1602. The facades decoration bear the mark of the Walachia style. A small museum inside the monastery. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R1 ; Route H2

30. Agapia Monastery - it was built between 1642 - 1647 at the initiative of helman Gavril. It was painted in 1858 by the great artist Nicolae Grigorescu when he was only 20 years old. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R1 ; Route H2.

31.Varatic Monastery - built in 1808, today is an important museum, with a valuable icons collections. This romantic place was frequented by the poet Mihai Eminescu and his friend, Veronica Micle, also a poet. Her grave is near the monastery.

32. Bistrita Monastery - it was built by the Alexandru the Kind in 1402., it was repaired by the Stephan the Great who built the tower in 1498. It had a cultural importance, praised by an important medieval museum.
33. Pangarati Monastery - it was founded in the time of Stephan the Great and rebuilt by the voivode Alexandru Lapusneanu in 1560. A church with two levels, unique for Orthodox style. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R1.
34. Durau Monastery - it was built in the 17th century by a daughter of the ruler Vasile Lupu, painting made later by N. Tonitza and his pupils Corneliu Baba in a rare technique - enchaustica. Inside the monastery is small and clean hotel for pilgrims. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route H2.
 
35. Bishopric Church - Roman Town - its construction started in 1542 under Petru Rares, and it was ended in 1550 under his son, Ilas Voda. It preserves valuable frescoes.
36. Saint John Church- Piatra Neamt - was built between 1497 - 1498. It preserving the original forms. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R1.
37. Raducanu Monastery - Tg. Ocna Town - it was built in 1664 by Radu Racovita, with paintings and sculptures of great artistic value.
38. Precista Church - Bacau - it was built by Voievode Alexandru , son of Stephan the Great (1490). Is a fortified church.
39. Saint John the Baptist Church - Vaslui town, it was built by Stephan the Great in 1490, marking the victory obtained against the armies of Soliman Pasha in 1475. The style is Moldavian classical.
40. Precista Church  Fortress - Galati city- it was built in 1647 by ruler Vasile Lupu, the valuable monument of medieval arts, was a safe shelter for people in difficult moments.
41. Mera Monastery - it was built in 1705 by the Cantemir royal family. It looks like a church of old   Moldavia style.

DOBRUDJA (DOBROGEA) PROVINCE

1. Basilica - Niculitel - the oldest construction of this type in Romania, it is unique in Europe. The basilica and the tomb were built during the reign of king Valens (after 370 A.D.).

2. Cocos Monastery - raised in 1835 in Oriental (Turkish) style but influenced greatly by Romanian architecture, too. Currently is a medieval and modern art museum.
3. Celik Dere Monastery - built between 1841 - 1844 by Romanian and Russian monks. It has a medieval art collections. Near the monastery is a windmill.
4. Mosque of Gaza Pasha - Babadag Town - the oldest monument of Muslim architecture in Romania (17th century).
5. Esmahan Sultan Mosque - Mangalia Town - was build in 1590 in Moorish style.
6. Saint George Orthodox Church - Constanta City (1905 - 1911) with wall paintings made by the famous painter Nicolae Tonitza.

7. Monastery - Basarabi (9 - 10th century), monk site in a cave , unique for Romanian ancient culture.

8. Dervent Monastery - built in 1936 by a prist and close in communism period. Is near the Apostle Andrei cave and is an important pilgrimage destination for travelers from Black Sea resorts.

VALLACHIA PROVINCE

1. Greek Church - Braila  (1863 - 1872), with valuable stained-glass windows and frescoes.

2. Episcopal Church - Buzau City, a huge church built in 1507 during Radu the Great's reign and rebuilt by Matei Basarab in 1649. Today it hosts a museum of antique art objects.
3. Monastery Church - Ramnicu Sarat. It was built during the Brancoveanu's reign (1691 - 1697).
4. Sinaia Monastery - built during 1690 - 1695 by the voivode's sword bearer Mihai Cantacuzino. The indoor paintings are very value. There is a small museum. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R2 ; Route H1.
5. Zamfira Monastery - founded by Lady Zamfira, completed in 1743, with a new church built in 1857, preserving the paintings made by Nicolae Grigorescu when he was only 18 years old.
6. Brebu Monastery - the construction during between 1650-1690. Matei Basarab start and Constantin Brancoveanu finished that monastery.
7. The Complex of the Patriarchy - Bucharest -  a large size complex, built between 1656 - 1658 by ruler Constantin Serban Basarab and finished in time of Radu Leon.  Beautiful decorations in Byzantium style. 8. Curtea Veche Church - the oldest in Bucharest. It is preserved in its initial form built between 1545 - 1547 by the ruler Mircea Ciobanu. There are also preserved some frescos from the reign of Stephen Cantacuzino. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R2 ; Route R4.
9. Mihai Voda Monastery - Bucharest City - (1589 - 1591), it was built by great voivode Michael the Brave, instead of an old church. It had strong defense walls and royal houses that later were used as residence of Fanar kings. The present complex includes: the Church, the Palace of the State Archives and the Belfry.
10. Antim Monastery - (1714-1715) Bucharest City - it was founded by the metropolitan bishop of Georgian origin, Antim Ivireanu. The monastery is one of the most beautiful in Bucharest in Brancovenesc style and a pilgrimage place. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R2.
11. Stavropoleos Church - Bucharest City - (1724-1730) - it was built trough the efforts of the Greek archimandrite Ioanichie. It preserved beautiful decorations, and a valuable paintings. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R1 ; Route R2 ; Route R4.
12. Snagov Monastery -situate on a island in a great lake, it is mentioned in documents of the end of the 14th century. The monastery was built by Vlad the Impaler (1456-1462). The present church dates since the 16th century. The paintings represent the largest medieval wall assembly in Valachian churches. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R4
13. Caldarusani Monastery - it was built by Neagoe Basarab, between 1637 - 1638. The monastery host a museum collections of old art objects.
14. Comana Monastery - it was built by Vlad the Impaler (1456-1462) and rebuilt by Radu Serban.
15. The Voivodal Church - Targoviste Town - represent one of the most important monuments of the Byzantine architecture. It was built in 1594 by Petru Cercel and later repaired by Constantin Brancoveanu., Grigore Ghica and Gheorghe Bibescu. It preserve fragments of the original fresque. 16. Dealu Monastery - it was built by Radu the Great between 1495 - 1508, the monastery represent one of the most valuable monuments of Medieval architecture in Valachia. Many of the Walachian rulers are buried here. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in Route R4.

17. Curtea de Arges Monastery - is a real architectural jewel. The monastery was built by Neagoe Basarab in 1517 and amazes by richness, pomp and glamour. In the neighborhood of the monastery we find the Fountain of Manole the Craftsman on the place were , the legend says, he fell from the roof. UNESCO patrimony. 18. The Negru Voda Monastery - Campulung Muscel town - traditions says that it was built in 1215 by the prince Radu Negru, then rebuilt by the legendary founder of Wallachia, Basarab the Ist and finished by his son, Nicolae Alexandru Basarab.
19. Cotmeana Monastery - the building started under the reign of Radu the Ist, 1377-1383, the church are rich decorations. During the centuries was rebuilt for many times.
20. Namaiesti Monastery - almost the entire building was excavated in the stone of the hill in 1545. Is situated in very picturesque area. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R4.

21. Horezu Monastery - the most important complex of Brancovenesque style. It was built by Constantin Brancoveanu between 1690 and 1697. 22. Cozia Monastery - one of the most valuable architectural monuments of the 14th century and a starting point for the Byzantine style in Vallachia. The church was built between 1386 - 1388 by the Mircea the Elder and draws attention with the harmony of proportions, rich ornamentation and exceptionally valuable painting. UNESCO patrimony. 23. Govora Monastery - it was mentioned in a document from 1488. The monastery was rebuilt by Vlad the Monk and Radu the Great. Under the rule of Constantin Brancoveanu, the monastery expanded and the present church was built , which preserves a valuable wall painting. The monastery has a museum with object of feudal art.
24. Bistrita Monastery - it was built between 1491 - 1492 by Craiovesti boyars. The old complex only preserves the small church, built by Ban Barbu Craiovescu between 1520 - 1521. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route H1.
25. Arnota Monastery - it was built by Matei Basarab between 1633 - 1636, his grave is inside the monastery. The wall paintings (1644) have great artistically and documentary value.
26. Dintr-un lemn Monastery - it was founded at the end of the 16th and beginnings of the 17th century. According to the legend, the church was made of only one oak by Preda Brancoveanu between 1634-1635.
27. Brancoveni Monastery - it was built in the 16th century. It was rebuilt by Matei Basarab in 1640 and By Constantin Brancoveanu in 1699. The wall painting was made in 1702.
28. The Sf. Dumitru Ruling Church - Craiova City - the oldest architectural monument in Craiova, it was built between 1651 - 1652, on the place of an old church.

29. Tismana Monastery - one of the oldest and most famous historical of Romania. It was built by Vlaicu Voda Basarab, at the advice of Serb Monk Nicodim, between 1375 - 1378.

30. Polovraci Monastery - the famous monastery was built in 1505, by Radul and Patrul and rebuilt by Constantin Brancoveanu in the 17th century, preserving many of the original frescos.

31. Lainici Monastery - the small convent was built in 15th century in a very beautiful mountain area. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route H1.
 
32. Vodita Monastery - it is one of the oldest monuments of the Romanian feudal art. Built by monk Nicodim (1364 - 1370) and Vladislav 1, ruler of Vallachia.
 

33. Gura Motrului Monastery - monument of old architecture built between 1512 - 1521 by Harvat , chancellor of Neagoe Basarab. The present church was built in 1653, in Moldavian style by magistrate Preda Brancoveanu.

1. Orthodox Cathedral - Timisoara City - high towers and colorful roof, it was raised between 1934- 1946 a mixture of Byzantine and Moldavian style. Include a medieval art museum with a valuable collections of icons.

 
2. Roman Catholic Cathedral - Timisoara City - built between 1737 - 1773 in Baroque style, having a beautiful decorations.
 
3. Serbian Orthodox Cathedral - Timisoara City - (1744 - 1748), the painting have great value.
 
4. The Hodos - Bodrog Monastery - was built in 1177, represents one of the oldest monuments of this type from Romania. The original monument was modified during the centuries. We can find here valuable paintings, a lot of manuscripts and other items.

TRANSYLVANIA AND MARAMURES PROVINCES

1. Densus Church - one of the oldest Romanian churches, built in the 13th century from the ruins of the Roman Sarmisegetusa. It has a strange shape retaining some elements of the Romanic style. Have an interesting mural paintings from 1443. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route H1.

2. Santamarie - Orlea (13th century) Romanic style, it preserve a great part of the precious original frescoes. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route H1 (optional)
 
3. Orthodox Church from Hunedoara City - was built in 15th century.
 
4. Cistercian Monastery - Carta is the oldest Gothic construction in Romania. It was raised by Cistercian monks in 1202, it was robbed and set of fire during Tartar invasion (1241 - 1242). afterwards it was reconstructed. It was canceled by the king Mihai Corvin in 1474.
 
5. Evangelic Church -Sibiu - it the first monument on the Romanian territory combining the archaic basilica with baroque style. Built in the 14th century, it still preserve mural paintings from 1445. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R2 ; Route R4.
6. Brancoveanu Church - Ocna Sibiului, founded by the Michael the Brave in 1600, restored by Constantin Brancoveanu in 1701.
 
7. Cisnadioara church - the oldest Romanic church in Romania, dated from 1223.

9. Sf. Margareta Church - Medias - impressive construction also known under the name of the "castle". The church was built in the 15th century. Its tower it is the symbol of the town and one of the most inclined in Europe. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R4.
 
10. Evangelic Church from Cisnadie - 13th century. Surrounded by defense walls and towers.
 
11. Black Church - Brasov (1385 - 1477), one of the most important monuments of Gothic art from Romania, The name comes from its black walls, result of a big fire from 1689. 13. Bartholomeus Church - Brasov .The oldest church in town. It was built in 1223 in Romanesque style, later Gothic elements are added. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R2.
 
14. Evangelic Church - Rasnov, the oldest religious buildings of the Basarab in Transylvania (1384).
 
15. Church - Harman. In Romanesque style, with gothic elements and fortifications, valuable frescoes (13-th century). UNESCO patrimony.
 
16. Sambata Monastery - it was built by the ruler Brancoveanu (1688-1714). Great cultural center situated in a picturesque area, close to the highest mountains in Romania - Fagaras. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route H1.
 
17. Roman-Catholic Church - Ghelinta - old monument (1245), in late Romanesque style. Inside a valuable wall painting made in 1330.
 
18. Fortified Church from Biborteni (15th century) had frescoes in Italian Renaissance style.
 
19. The Baroque Complex from Sumuleu - it was built in 1804 on the place of the Franciscan Church built in 1442 by Iancu de Hunedoara. It hosts one of the biggest organs in Transylvania.
 
20. Fortified Roman-Catholic Church- Carta (1444) it preserve original Gothic elements.

22. Church of the Dominican Monastery - Sighisoara (1298)- later suffered a series of changes. UNESCO patrimony. Accesible in Activ Travel offers in: Route R2 ; Route R4 .
 
23. Reformed Church - Targu Mures - beautiful monument in Gothic style. Its constructions begin in 1316 and was completed in 1442, with the support of ruler Iancu de Hunedoara.
 
24. Evangelical Church - Reghin - was built between 1300-1330.

28. Ramet Monastery - built in 1240, is one of the oldest orthodox church in Transylvania. Today is a big complex, with two churches, museum, and monk houses. Situated inside Apuseni Mountains in a very picturesque area.
 
29. Romanesque Church - Santimbru (13th century) - Iancu de Hunedoara, restored it, in memory of a battle.

34. Calvinist Church - Turda (1387-1437), important Gothic monument in Romania. It was erected during the reign of Sigismund of Luxembourg.
 
35. Orthodox Church - Feleacu. Built by the Moldavian Ruler, Stephan the Great, in Gothic style (1486-1488) on the top of the Feleacu Hill, close to Cluj-Napoca city.

37. Roman-Catholic Cathedral - Oradea (1752-1780) - It is the largest Baroque Church in Romania, made of Carrara and Vascau marble, inspired by the Baroque church of Northern Italy.
 
38. The Orthodox Church "cu Luna"(with Moon) - Oradea (1784-1790). Blending the elements of the Baroque style with Neoclassical ones. Under the horologe, we find a sphere which works on the basis of an original mechanism indicating the Moon phases in its rotation.
 
39. Wooden Church - Fidu de Sus (1727) - it is an historical and artistic monument, one of the most beautiful achievements of folkloric architecture in Romania. Its steeple is 40m high. The indoor painting was made in 1856.
 
40. Church of Uileacu Simleului village (1260-1300) in Romanic style. Is the only fortified church on the region with great historical and architectural value.
 
41. Reformat Church - Acas (12th century)- it belonged to a former Benedicts Monastery, repaired in 1732.
 
42. Wooden Churches from Maramures land are unique in the world due to the specific Romanian style, in their forms and adornments. Some of the most beautiful churches can be found in this villages: Surdesti (1724, the highest tower in the country: 54m); Barsana, Budesti, Botiza, Calinesti, Bogdan Voda, Moisei ... 46. Vad Monastery - it was built by Stephan the Great, in Moldavian style.
