Romania offer many and varied places for climbing. You can choose by type of rocks, height and difficulty. Also you can practice all climbing style: mountaineering, traditional (classic) climbing, free climbing, ice climbing (in winter), bouldering. The difficulty of rock climbing routes start with 2 UIAA, and finish with 10 UIAA (8b on French degree), for instance. The highest rocks walls in Romania are: Valea Alba Wall (900m from "La Verdeata" ), Galbenele Wall, Vulturilor Wall, Costila Wall (approx.350 - 500m high) - Bucegi Mountains; Padina Inchisa Wall (400 - 450m high) - Piatra Craiului Mountains; Bardosului Wall (360m) - Hasmasului Mountains; Urias Wall (250-300m) - Trascau Mountains.

1. Gutai Mountains - a basalt and andesit rock, a ridge with many climbing routes - Creasta Cocosului, situated in very beautiful area. Medium difficulty : 2 - 5/6 UIAA. approx. number of routes: 38. 2.Rarau Mountains - with very beautiful towers - Pietrele Doamnei, and other limestone walls (Piatra Soimului, Piatra Cotetului), splendid landscapes. Easy to medium difficulty: 2 - 5 UIAA. 3.Hasmas Mountains - with famous Bicaz Gorges and Lacu Rosu area, considered the third great climbing region in Romania. For many climbers, but especially for free climbers and boulder climbers the Gorges of Bicaz hold the first place, as regard the great number of maximum difficulty routes. Walls of 360 m and more high, with big ceilings in the final part. Medium to hard and very hard difficulty. A place recommended for sport climbing. Approx. number of route:250. 6.Postavaru Mountains - offers a great number of spectacular walls: Abruptul Itvig, Rasnov Gorges, Pietrele lui Solomon, Vanga Mare Walls, Prapastia Lupului. 7.Bucegi Mountains - the first place as regard the preferences of the Romanian climbers and others. There are over 600 climbing routes, from the easiest to the most difficult. You can find here the biggest rock walls from Romania: Valea Alba, Vulturilor, Costila, Galbinelele. Other areas: Turnul Seciului, Pelesului Gorges, Sfanta Ana Rocks, Belvedere Wall, Bisericuta Malaiesti, Tatarului Gorges... Place recommended for all type of climbing. 8.Piatra Craiului Mountains is considered the second or the third great playground of climbers in the Carpathians. Is very frequented because the beauty of the routes, and the surrounding landscapes. You can try some areas: Diana Towers, Padina Inchisa, Orga Mare, Marele Grohotis Wall, Spirla, Prapastiile Zarnesti (for free climbing), Acul Crapaturii, Padina lui Calinet, Cioranga, Umerii, Galbenoasa Wall... 9.Fagaras Mountains - surnamed the Alps of Transylvania, known as the highest and the wildest mountains in Romania, a crystalline structure,not very high vertical walls for climbing. The most attractive are: Coltul Balaceni, Laita North Face, North Ridges, Arpaselului ridge, Custura Ciobanului... The Fagaras offers more modest and medium difficulty routes. 10.Capatina Mountains - wild and beautiful limestone areas, ideal for climbing. The most frequented climbing places is Buila - Vanturarita with Cheii Gorges and Claia Stramba. 11.Parang Mountains - climbing places discovered later by Romanian climbers. Now, a representative destination for many climbers. The limestone walls are about 200 m high: Oltetului Gorges (Plesei Rock Wall), Muierilor Cave Wall, Radului Wall. Place recommended for classic climbing. Difficulty level (2 - 5/6 UIAA). 12.Retezat Mountains - a beautiful mountains offering, in its high region, classical climbing routes but also sports climbing routes especially in the Butii Gorges. There are severe restrictions as regards camping and garbage storing. The number of routes - 67 in Peleaga North Face, Bucura North Face, Judele Mic and Judele Mare North-West Wall. 13.Cerna - Mehedinti Mountains - a climbing limestone paradise, especially for sport climbing. During the last years, there had been established a great number of sport climbing routes. These are a highly picturesque regions when you can find: Peciniscai and Prolazului Gorges, Grota Haiducilor Wall, Bobot and Cociu Walls, Soimului Wall. 14.Trascau Mountains - offer another large limestone region were climbing is practiced. The Turzii Gorges - natural monument - have the greatest number of climbing routes. That is were sport climbing was initiated in Romania. Nowadays, the number and variety of routes are remarkable. 65 classical routes plus many new sport climbing routes. 15.Padurea Craiului Mountains - two very appreciated climbing areas: Vadu Crisului and Suncuius with a lot of routes, especially for free sport climbing. 16.Macin Mountains - isolated from Carpathians by Danube. This small mountain has a granite insecure summit with short but spectacular climbing region. You can climb in Calacea, Dobrudja Gorges. Difficulty level (2 -7 UIAA). |
