Caves in Romania Romania amaze all the world by his carst beauty and earn the first place by variety of caves. All the most important caves are situated in limestone area from Apuseni Mountains and West of Meridionali Carpathians. For instance, more than 10 000 big or small caves were sorted by Romanian speleologics. On this page we try to introduce to you the most recommended and appreciated areas for caving. Also a top 10 of the biggest caves from Romania and the most beautiful in Romania.

1. Padurea Craiului Mountains - the largest limestone area in Carpathians. Small altitude, covered by woods, the principal attraction is the underground paradise. There is a spelunking chalet in Suncuius village. Many active caves, some of them being very long (50 km - (Vintului) Wind Cave) recommend this area for advanced. Here you can take a chance for new discoveries. 2. Bihor Mountains - large and big mountains, including the most spectacular carst area in Carpathians: Padis Plateau (a great density of caves), Crisului Sources, Sighistel Valley, Garda Valley, Somesului Cald Sources ... Between all this Ponorului Fortress are the most impressive. Scarisoare Cave has the biggest underground glacier in Romania. 3. Trascau Mountains - small altitude but very picturesque. The caves - not very big or very difficult. Is a good area to learn about this beautiful hobby. The most impressive cave are Huda lui Papara (long and active cave). Important caves: Huda lui Papara Cave (5200m); Dambau Cave (1200m); Cetateaua Mica - Mare Cave; Haldahaia Mica Cave(1168m)

5. Anina Mountains - the most important caving area in Banat Mountains. Big and beautiful caves, many of this being active, spectacular gorges (Nera) and splendid waterfalls like Beusnitei waterfall. 10. Valcan Mountains - a mysterious land with many monasteries and caves, both -nature and anthropic- very beautiful. In Darnimii Cave are the biggest stalagmites from Romania, some with more than 10 m height. 11. Parang Mountains - big and massive mountains, an interesting limestone area with many small caves. The Muierii Cave (3566m) is the biggest and one of the most popular cave from Romania, but you can find a lot of other wild caves.
